Prunedale is an unincorporated community in northern Monterey County, just north of Salinas along Highway 101. It keeps a rural feel in most areas, and nearly four in five homes are detached houses. The median home here was built in 1977, and about three in four households own their home. On a sloped lot, a new patio often starts with a retaining wall, steps and a plan for runoff.
Aguilar and Sons Construction is a family construction company based in Salinas, and Prunedale is close to home for us. As a hardscape contractor in Prunedale, we build paver patios, flagstone walkways, retaining walls, and stamped and plain concrete. We also build masonry, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, pergolas, fences, gates and redwood decks under one contract. Call or text (831) 262-9943 for a free estimate.

Chaparral covers the ridges north of Prunedale, and oak woodland grows in the area around it. On a sloped lot in the Prunedale Hills, level ground is what makes a yard usable. A retaining wall holds back the hill so a patio can sit flat.
We pour concrete walls and build concrete block walls, then finish them in stucco or stone veneer. Each wall gets drain rock, perforated pipe and weep holes behind it, so water has a way out. Engineered walls are built to the engineer's plans and the permit.
Where a yard steps down, concrete steps and landings connect the patio to the lower yard. Where a wall would get too tall, a redwood deck can create level space over the slope. Both can go on the same plan as the wall.
Prunedale is unincorporated, so Monterey County Housing and Community Development handles permits here. In North County, which includes Prunedale, the county requires a construction permit for grading on slopes over 25 percent. In the rest of the unincorporated county, that line is 30 percent. Grading over 100 cubic yards, cut and fill counted together, also takes a construction permit.
A grading permit can also be required when grading creates slopes steeper than 2 to 1. The same is true for a cut slope higher than five feet. Langley Creek flows by Highway 101 through Prunedale, and grading that affects a drainage course can need one too.
Before it issues a building or grading permit, the county requires an approved erosion control plan. On soils that drain over two inches per hour, permitted work must hold its added runoff on the site. We slope each patio away from the house and give runoff a planned path. Confirm what your parcel needs with Monterey County Housing and Community Development before work starts.
The early plum orchard that gave Prunedale its name failed, but the name stayed. The 1970s was the biggest decade for today's homes, at about one home in four. Almost six homes in ten were built before 1980. A driveway poured with a 1977 house, the median year here, has been in place for close to fifty years.
When a cracked, settled concrete driveway is past patching, the fix is tear-out and a new pour. We rebuild the base with compacted rock, set rebar on chairs and pour a slab thick enough for vehicles. Control joints are cut to guide cracking, and the finish can be broom, exposed aggregate or color. Monterey County requires a construction permit for grading a driveway over 50 feet long.
Out back, a worn concrete patio can be replaced or extended in a broom, salt or stamped concrete finish. Walkways and mow strips round out the concrete work, and one written estimate can cover all of it. At the road, fences and gates in redwood or custom iron can finish a rural entry.
Monterey County requires a Tree Removal Permit to remove a protected tree or substantially trim one. We lay out patios and walks around the oaks you want to keep, with footings set back from trunks. Pavers and dry-laid flagstone sit on compacted base, so a section can be relaid if roots push it up.
Mortar-set flagstone on a concrete slab makes a firm patio or landing by the house. Tumbled or large-format pavers can follow a curve around a trunk or step down a slope. On any soil, compaction is what keeps a paver patio flat.
As a masonry contractor in Prunedale, we build concrete block walls, stone veneer planters, seat walls and column bases. The same stone can face an outdoor kitchen or an outdoor fireplace beside the patio. Gas, electrical and water runs go through licensed trade contractors, and we coordinate them. We also frame wood pergolas on stone column bases to shade the patio.
