Pavers
We set paver patios, walkways and driveways on excavated, compacted base rock with edge restraint on every open side. We lay tumbled, large-format and permeable concrete pavers, cut and fitted to the shape of the yard.

Aguilar and Sons Construction builds paver driveways in Salinas and across the Monterey Bay area. A driveway asks more of pavers than a patio, because cars and trucks turn and brake on it daily. So the base goes deeper and the edges get stronger. Our crew builds that base before the first paver goes down.
Our driveway paver installation covers new drives, replacements of old concrete or asphalt, widening, and parking or RV pads. Patios and walkways are part of our paver installation service. We are a licensed general building contractor based in Salinas, CSLB license #787101. Call or text (831) 262-9943 for a free estimate.

A patio carries people and furniture. A paver driveway carries a car, a loaded pickup or an RV, and that weight passes into the base. So the base does most of the work, and it has to be built for vehicles.
The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute recommends a minimum aggregate base of 6 to 8 inches for driveways. The base can go deeper on weak or wet soil and under heavier loads. We place the base rock in lifts and compact each lift before the next one goes down.
The same guidance recommends 2 3/8 inch pavers for a home driveway. Pavement under regular vehicle traffic typically calls for 3 1/8 inch pavers. For the pattern, the guidance recommends 45 or 90 degree herringbone where vehicles drive every day, for the most interlock.
Edge restraints hold the pavers and sand together, and the Institute calls them essential. On the open sides of a driveway we pour a concrete edge or band. Cut pieces go where the pavers meet the garage slab and the street. In a tire path, the guidance keeps each cut paver at least one-third of a full unit.
We slope the drive so water runs away from the house and the garage. The sandy hills around Prunedale and Aromas carry soils mapped on slopes of 9 to 75 percent. Paving guidance says a paver drive sloped over 8 percent may need concrete header beams at the top and bottom. A steep drive may also call for retaining walls beside it, which we build too.
The approach, where the drive meets the street, sits in the public right of way. Salinas, Seaside and Marina all list driveway approach work under their encroachment permits. The City of Monterey lists its encroachment permit application apart from the building permit. Outside city limits, in Prunedale or Carmel Valley, the Monterey County Housing and Community Development Permit Center handles permits.
A permeable paver driveway lets rain seep through the surface into the gravel and soil below. The EPA lists interlocking pavers among its permeable paving types. Whether one works on your lot depends on the ground under it.
Around Marina and Seaside, federal soil surveys map soils that formed in old sand dunes, with rapid permeability. Sand like that takes water well, but it still has to be compacted to carry a car. Freezing is rare near the coast, where the frost-free season runs about 250 to 350 days. Water and base settlement are what move pavers here.
The Salinas Valley floor is different. Its loam and clay loam soils have moderately slow permeability, so water soaks in slowly. On ground like that, EPA guidance says permeable pavement often needs a deeper stone base, and an underdrain can help. That underdrain is a perforated pipe that carries extra water to an outlet.

Stamped concrete gives a patio or walkway the color and texture of cut stone in one poured slab. We form it, set the steel, stamp the pattern and seal the finish.
